The Bloody Butcher is an old German Heritage variety, that will produce vigorous tomato plants with prolific crops of red, golf ball-sized fruits with a dark ‘blood-red’ juice inside. It will be one of the first tomatoes to ripen in my greenhouse every year, and almost the last to harvest as well, even in cool conditions! Making it perfect for UK gardens.
Yielding handfuls of these gorgeous tomato fruits, you’ll have plenty of uses for the Bloody Butcher. Its fruits have a proper tomato taste which works well in sandwiches, salads and added to sauces. Cordon variety, harvesting late June-early October. Height 151-200cm (59-79"); spread 51-60cm (20-24").
The ‘Bloody Butcher’ is included in the Rob Smith Heritage Range which is dedicated to his love for gardening and allotment growing. So why not try a tomato variety that has stood the test of time, a must-have for any keen gardener.
Sow tomato seeds thinly in seed trays of seed and potting compost, water carefully. Keep in a heated greenhouse or propagator at 15-20C. Transplant into larger individual pots when reaching 10cm in height.
Sow February/March for greenhouse growing (or April for outdoors) in a propagator on a windowsill or pots or trays in a greenhouse at 18-21°C (65-70°F) using a quality compost. Cover seeds with 6mm (¼") sieved compost. (Germination 7-14 days). Transplant seedlings singly into 7.5cm (3") pots when they reach 10cm in height. Grow on, finally planting into large pots, grow bags or direct into the greenhouse border; or outdoors 45cm (18") apart when frost risk has passed. Feed regularly and side-shoot as necessary.
