With proper planting and maintenance, you can look forward to a rewarding yield for a variety of delicious dishes. Explore our growing tips below to successfully fill your pantry.

How to plant onions

Plant onion sets in rows in firm, well-drained soil in full sun. Prepare the planting area by incorporating well-rotted garden compost. When growing onions from sets, plant the bulbs with the tip just protruding through the soil surface. Space the bulbs 10cm apart, and leave 30cm between each row. You might need to protect the bed from birds for a few weeks, as they like to pull up the protruding tips!

How to plant shallots

Planting shallots follows the same process as onions, and they will thrive in the same conditions. Avoid planting shallots on freshly manured soil. On especially wet ground, try growing them in raised beds. When growing shallots from sets, leave a space of 18cm between each bulb, and 30cm between each row.
