How to choose the best foliage house plants

Foliage house plants add interesting shapes and texture to every room. Short of space? Why not try Sansevieria boncellensis, a dwarf form of the familiar snake plant, or easy-to-grow lithops which are slow-growing succulents that live happily on a windowsill. If it’s a statement plant you need, have a look at our ficus varieties. Find more tips in our guide to windowsill gardening and see our frequently asked questions below.

Which foliage house plants grow tallest?

For a towering statement plant that can reach 4m high, choose Dypsis lutescens (bamboo palm).

Which foliage house plants grow best in sunny spots?

For a bright, sunny spot, you could try Aloe vera or Senecio ‘String of Teardrops’. For something a bit different, Nepenthes hybrider ‘Blood Red’ is a carnivorous plant that looks especially good in a hanging planter.

Which foliage house plants are drought tolerant?

Mangave ‘Moonglow’, M. ‘Pineapple Express’, Senecio ‘String of Teardrops’, and lithops are all good choices if you’re looking for plants that can survive with very little water.
