In spring, an exuberant display of soft pink, trumpet-shaped blooms bursts into life followed by a second flush in autumn adding interest just as other plants are beginning to wane. Bushy, semi-evergreen, glossy foliage, provides year-round interest, forming a pleasingly rounded mound that makes a neat subject for containers. In autumn, the leaves often take on deep purple tones, and in cold locations Rhododendron ‘Encore’ will lose some foliage during the winter months, with fresh, glossy leaves taking their place in spring.

Grow Rhododendrons in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply.
