Lavender Hidcote
One of the best-known varieties of English lavender!
No summer garden should be without this traditional favourite! Be creative with your lavender: its mounds of fragrant grey-green foliage are ideal for borders, hedging, in pots, or in combination with other architectural plants such as agapanthus. Hang bunches of flowers to dry and use it in potpourri indoors. Hidcote - It's dense, intensely aromatic, silver-grey foliage is covered, in summer, with spikes of fragrant, deep violet flowers. Height 60cm. Middle of border variety.
With garden plants, as with so much else, new is not always better, and that certainly applies to Lavenders, where new varieties seem to be introduced every year. Hidcote, named after the famous garden in Gloucestershire, has been around for fifty years or more, and is tough and hardy, with a dense compact habit, grey-green leaves and masses of erect spikes profusely covered with deep violet-blue flowers, filling the air with fragrance and always attractive to bees.
Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 75cm (30"). Grow English lavender plants in free draining soil. Choose a position in full sun. Lavenders dislike wet ground, particularly during winter. Improve heavy soil conditions by adding coarse grit or sharp sand prior to planting. When growing English lavender in large patio containers, use a well drained soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. After planting, prune lavender plants to encourage bushy growth.
