Clematis 'White Arabella' is a charming, deciduous climbing plant celebrated for its striking white flowers and prolonged blooming season. Launched in 2018, this cultivar is a white variant of the well-loved 'Arabella,' making it a versatile choice for a variety of garden environments.
This climber exhibits a non-clinging growth habit, allowing it to either ascend supports or spread across the ground. Its dark green, deciduous foliage serves as a vibrant backdrop for the semi-double white blooms that appear in spring, evolving into single star-shaped flowers throughout the summer. Each flower measures around 7 cm (3 in) in diameter, with a blooming period extending from May to September, although it is not particularly fragrant.
Clematis 'White Arabella' thrives in full sun to partial shade, with a preference for moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells, while care should be taken to prevent waterlogging. Hardy in the UK, this plant can withstand temperatures as low as -23°C. It is well-suited for trellises, fences, and containers, and can also be used as ground cover or grown through shrubs and small trees, attracting pollinators like bees. Pruning should be done in early spring to promote vigorous growth and abundant flowering.
Pot up clematis plants and grow them on until large enough to plant in their final positions. When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3") below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry.
