Growing broad bean plants

When growing broad beans, ensure that they are supported by a framework or wigwam using bamboo canes between rows. Towards the end of the season they are larger, less tender and more floury. The pod is usually discarded (and sometimes the skins of the beans are too) but when very young, and less than 10cm long, the pods, skins and beans can be eaten in their entirety.

Best harvested in spring when they are young, sweet and have a nutty flavour.

And the leafy tips of the plants can even be steamed and eaten too!
