With its whirling, almost alien-looking spirals, you'd be forgiven for thinking that this vivid green brassica is some kind of genetically engineered vegetable. In fact, romanesco has been around since the 16th century and predates broccoli and cauliflower. Sometimes referred to as caulibroc or broccoflower, the flavour of cooked romanesco sits somewhere between cauliflower and broccoli, but with an added tasty 'nuttiness'. Rich in antioxidants, vitamin C and fibre, romanesco is a nutritional power house. Snap off the spears and cook them as you would broccoli, or steam the full heads to preserve their green good looks, and serve them individually, well seasoned and garnished with butter. Once cooked, romanesco can be easily crushed and then sautéed with garlic and chilli, mixed with pasta and topped with a sprinkling of Parmesan for a quick and easy supper. An ideal candidate for potager gardens or to replace ornamental cabbage in a planting scheme, romanesco is an easy-to-grow brassica that will give you surprising results from an early spring sowing.

For the earliest summer crops, sow relevant varieties from September and overwinter in a cold frame, planting outdoors in spring. Alternatively for slightly later maturity sow under glass at 10–15°C (50–60°F) February-March. Harden off plants before planting outdoors. For maincrops sow direct outdoors, 1.8cm deep, in a prepared seedbed March-May.

Spring and Autumn/Winter Harvest - These hardy cauliflowers stand the winter outdoors though protection such as fleece may be necessary in cold areas. Sow 1.8cm deep April-May on a prepared seedbed. Thin seedlings to approximately 10cm apart. In June or July transplant firmly at 60cm spacing on soil manured for a previous crop.

Live Plants

Dobies strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.

Non Standard Deliveries

Unfortunately like many companies in our industry we are currently only able to supply orders to UK based customers, excluding those in Northern Ireland. We are committed to finding a way that we can resume or normal services again as soon as possible. Please accept our apologies for any inconvience caused.

Prices include VAT where applicable.

We reserve the right to contact you and advise an additional charge where necessary and are happy to quote for carriage of specific products to more remote areas. Some items may not be available to all areas.

We reserve the right to revise any carriage charges in the event of carrier price increase or other unforeseen circumstances. We will always advise of the carriage charge before payment is taken.

Large Non-standard items may incur a higher, lorry delivery charge. Charges will be calculated at checkout, but an example of the lorry charges are listed below.

  • Red - £9.99.
  • Purple - £2.99.
