Acer palmatum 'Brown Sugar' is a remarkable cultivar of Japanese maple, distinguished by its stunning foliage and compact growth characteristics. This tree is particularly well-suited for small gardens, patios, or container arrangements, providing visual appeal throughout the year. Its aesthetic qualities make it a favored choice among gardeners looking to enhance their outdoor spaces with a unique specimen.
This cultivar is an exceptional option for those who desire a low-maintenance yet visually striking tree that maintains interest across all seasons. Acer palmatum 'Brown Sugar' integrates seamlessly into various garden environments, making it a versatile addition to any landscape design. Its adaptability and charm contribute to its popularity among horticulturists and garden enthusiasts alike.
The foliage of this tree exhibits a captivating transformation throughout the seasons. In spring, the young leaves emerge in shades of chocolate-brown to reddish tones, transitioning to a rich dark green in summer, with new red shoots making an appearance. As autumn approaches, the leaves display a vibrant array of orange to red hues before falling, while the red branches remain a striking feature during the winter months.
The tree exhibits excellent branching, evolving into a bushy, rounded shape over time, and is notably hardy, withstanding temperatures as low as -23.5°C. It thrives in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH and prefers partial shade to full sun, benefiting from some afternoon shade to avoid leaf scorch. For optimal growth, it should be planted in a sheltered area to shield it from harsh winds and intense sunlight, with regular watering during dry spells to ensure consistent soil moisture, and mulching to help retain moisture and regulate temperature. This cultivar pairs beautifully with other Japanese maples, hydrangeas, and camellias, contributing to a cohesive garden design. Typically, it reaches a height of up to 2 meters (6.5 feet) and a spread of 1.5 meters (5 feet), growing at a slow rate.

Ideal for small gardens, patios, or container planting, this tree offers year-round visual interest. Grow Acers in any moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or dappled shade. Live Plants
Dobies strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.
Non Standard Deliveries
Unfortunately like many companies in our industry we are currently only able to supply orders to UK based customers, excluding those in Northern Ireland. We are committed to finding a way that we can resume or normal services again as soon as possible. Please accept our apologies for any inconvience caused.
Prices include VAT where applicable.
We reserve the right to contact you and advise an additional charge where necessary and are happy to quote for carriage of specific products to more remote areas. Some items may not be available to all areas.
