It's hard to find a more attractive Crab Apple tree than this one! Malus 'Prairifire' produces a reddish-magenta flower in the months of spring, followed by a stunning backdrop of purple foliage which later turns green.
In the Autumnal season, maroon, berry-sized fruits hang from this tree, remaining into the winter months as a great source of food for visiting garden birds. The bark of this deciduous tree is a glossy dark red and brings character and interest to any garden it grows in. This hardy tree is worth growing because it brings masses of colour and structure which would spring any lacking garden to life.

Generally crab apples are too tart to eat raw, but their apple flavour becomes intense when cooked. Cab apples have high pectin content great for jam and jellies, and are a perfect ingredient for chutneys.
Plant crab apple trees in a sheltered, sunny position in any fertile, well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole and drive the stake into the ground to support the tree. Staking after planting may result in damage to the root ball. Plant fruit trees at their original soil level and firm them into the ground. Fasten the tree to the stake using a tree tie, and water well.
