The unusual leaf shape gives a bit more interest in the garden compared to regular lettuce, plus they are slow to set seed and you'll be able to crop them for longer too. Also known as Bronze Arrowhead. Winner of the AAS award in 1947, recorded as "the finest, most colourful and delicious variety".

Growing the Bronze Beauty from seed

Heat tolerant and slow to bolt in hot weather, meaning they crop for longer. Plants grow well in semi-shade, try growing around the bottom of runner beans to make the most of your growing space and get 2 crops from one bed.

For an early crop, sow in trays or modules in a colder greenhouse from Jan-March. When large enough to handle, plant into greenhouse border or pots where they are to crop. Sow March-June outside where they are to crop 30cm between rows, thin to 20-30cm between plants. Thinnings can be added to salads or sandwiches or replanted elsewhere in the garden. Keep well watered in hot weather.

Ideal for beds and borders, patio pots and containers, greenhouses, raised beds. Grows well in sun or shade.
