For maincrop, sow on a prepared seed bed outdoors early March-late April. For early crops, sow in frames or under cloches during February. Transplant to final growing positions at 60-90cm (2-3') apart in well-firmed soil May-early June. Harvest October-February.
Pick from base upwards when small walnut size - pushing downwards to remove. F1 hybrids will all be ready at the same time. As autumn approaches earth up stems to anchor plants securely. HEALTH BENEFITS - Antioxidant. Good source of vitamin C (Anti-ageing, wound healing, decreasing blood cholesterol and prevention of infections. Assists the body in absorbing iron). ANTIOXIDANTS: Term used to describe a number of organic substances such as vitamins A, C & E, the mineral Selenium and 'Carotenoids' - the pigments which colour many fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants are thought to help prevent cancers, heart and stroke problems by assisting in the 'mopping up' and expulsion from the body of substances known as 'free radicals' which can be created by exposure to various environmental pollutants. COOKING HINTS - Fresh use or freezing. Cut cross on base of sprout and boil for minimum period.
