Dahlias are currently enjoying a much deserved return to popularity. They suit all garden situations from borders to pots on the patio, and they also make ideal cut flowers. While many people grow them as annuals, they are in fact tender perennials, forming a tuber under the earth which, if lifted in autumn and stored in a frost-free place, can be planted again the following spring. Plant tubers directly into the garden from early May onwards for late summer flowering; alternatively, for earlier flowering, pot them up in the greenhouse in March or April and plant out at the end of May when the danger of frost has passed. Flowers July to first frosts, unless otherwise stated.
