The first F1 hybrid red onion from sets and an excellent variety! Hyred is one of the latest to mature, lifting in early September. The long growing season results in a heavy crop of crimson bulbs. Hybrid vigour gives a consistent semi globe shape and the flavour of the pink tinged flesh is spicy and robust. Hyred stores well into the spring if kept cool and dry. Maturing time approximately 18-20 weeks from planting. For delivery early April. Treatment is not completed until March, therefore, heat treated sets will be despatched separate to your main order. Onion sets are small immature onion 'bulbs' in an arrested stage of growth. When planted in spring they begin to grow again and will become full size onions by late summer. They are rarely attacked by pests or disease and thrive in ordinary conditions.

Culture: Choose a well-drained sunny position where the soil is reasonably good. Plant by setting the bulbs 10cm (4") apart in rows 30cm (12") apart during March and April so that only the tips of the small bulbs show above the soil surface.
Hints: Specially prepared for optimum growing performance. Reduced instance of bolting (running to seed). Outstanding quality in bulbs produced. Ideal for the show bench. NB: Heat treated sets exhibit darker skins and are low in moisture. Initial growth may be restricted but soon speeds up provided they are planted into warm, moist soil.
