Parsnip Seeds - Hollow Crown

Pastinaca sativa

“Grown in Britain from before 1820, ‘Hollow Crown’ is probably the oldest parsnip still in cultivation. The name comes from the way the top of the parsnip drops in towards the leaves, forming a ‘crown’ shape. Each root will grow to around 30cm (12”), with nice solid flesh and very sweet flavour. Let the roots get ‘frost kissed’ before harvesting, to maximise the sweet taste.“

Excellent roots can be grown on fertile ground which has been well dug during winter. Sow seeds March-April in drills 30-38cm (12-15") apart into warm, moist, weed-free soil. Thin resulting seedlings to 15-20cm (6-8") apart. Alternatively, start seeds off indoors in toilet roll tubes filled with moist compost. Sow 3 seeds per tube and thin to the best one. When planting out, make a conical shape in the soil with a crowbar and fill with sand/compost. Plant the toilet roll tube into the hole and keep well watered. Exposure to frost improves the flavour.

Idea for beds and borders.
