Compact plants, ideal for patios
The ‘Cobnut’ type squash is now one of our top selling vegetables, courtesy of exposure in the supermarkets and TV Chef recipes. Up until now though trailing plant habits have required considerable room in the garden. Enter a British plant breeder to come up with ‘Butterbush’ with its compact, bushy habit, bred specifically to grow in large containers on the patio or small garden spaces.
Culture: Sow all varieties under cover late April-May, and plant out when danger of frost has passed, allowing 60cm (24”) between bush varieties and 120cm (48”) between trailing plants. Harvest late September-October.
