One of the most expensive items a chicken keeper needs to buy is a suitable house and so this does require some thought.
A quality house will last for many years, providing it is well maintained. It needs to keep your hens safe from predators, provide them with somewhere cosy to lay their eggs and be easy to clean. As with other things in the garden the chances are you’d also like the chicken house to look reasonably attractive. Take a look at our range and we believe you’ll find our houses all fit the bill.
Even if your chickens will be free range a run of some sorts is still useful for those mornings when you spot Mr Fox nosing about, want to go out for the day or simply want to keep the birds temporarily off your newly planted garden.
Some key points to consider:
- The number of chickens Sounds obvious but it really is important to have the right sized house and run for the number of chickens you will be keeping. Buy a house too small and those chickens at the bottom of the pecking order will suffer. Buy a house too big and the chickens will struggle to keep warm during cold winter nights and sickness may take hold.
- Mobility Do you have the space to move the house to a new position every couple of weeks? Some houses come on wheels, some have lifting handles and others are simply too heavy to ever be moved without a struggle! If you have limited space, then a house with a run attached may be the solution.
- Access to the great outdoors How free range will your chickens be? An ark such as the Dobies Bantam Ark will enable your chickens or bantams access to the run and as the ark is very portable they can be frequently moved to fresh grass. The door can be opened to allow the chickens access to the garden. If you have a fair amount of space, then a chicken house inside an electric fence is the perfect set-up.
The houses that we supply are all made in the UK using timber from sustainable sources. They have been designed and tested with both the chicken and the chicken keeper in mind and are practical, affordable and aesthetically pleasing.
